A Guide To Areas of Birmingham’s City Centre
Here is our guide to the areas in Birmingham, the country’s Second city.
Birmingham is one of the most popular cities in the UK for business and tourism and is currently undergoing some exciting regeneration. The residential regions of the city centre can be broken down into several quarters. Each of these offers a different slice of the Birmingham experience, so here’s a good look at the properties and businesses available in each.
Birmingham’s Finance district is home to many insurance and banking businesses, the highest number outside of London. The Finance district is situated around Colmore Row, towards Snow Hill station and is currently going through a £600 million master plan to improve the area. Below the Financial district, surrounding New Street Station and the fabulous Grand Central complex, it houses numerous restaurants, museums and shops, including the Bullring Centre and John Lewis flagship store. The city thrives off links to all the major motorways with links to the M5, M6, M40 and M42 via the Spaghetti Junction. It also has fantastic bus links, national train links and a smart new tram system, linking Wolverhampton to Birmingham and plans to extend the line towards Brindley Place and Edgbaston. On the ground level, commercial factors are high here, meaning most properties tend to be restaurants, cafés or commercial outlets. There are plenty of luxury offices and residential apartments.
The Jewellery Quarter
This quarter has one of the largest concentrations of jewellery businesses in Europe, as well as the 18th century Birmingham Assay Office, currently the largest of its type in the world. As a result of this important business, there are numerous high-end retailers, designers and crafters of jewellery are located here. There are also plenty of residential properties, although many of the older terraces have long been converted into workshops on the inside to help support the extensive jewellery trade. St Pauls Square is a popular focal point of the area, a beautiful Georgian square, where our city office is situated.
Birmingham’s East Side is an area undergoing active redevelopment. While this will incorporate some of its old charm, such as the historic Curzon Street Station, it will see a number of parks, office buildings and luxury apartments appear over the coming years. Consequently, numerous brand new properties will become available. The proposed Hs2 link to London will be arriving into Curzon Street Station.
Digbeth (Irish Quarter)
Also known as the Irish Quarter, Digbeth is another area undergoing active redevelopment. Many people consider Digbeth to be part of the city core, with St Phillips Cathedral peering over the quirky Selfridges curved building, with its array of industrial buildings – which are currently being removed to make way for artistic projects, retail businesses, offices and apartment. After its redevelopment, this will further extend the city centre, so more luxury apartments and coveted office space can be expected. This area has its own bus routes, houses the city’s coach depot and is also close to both Birmingham New Street and Moor Street stations.
Southside (China Town)
China Town, more formally known as Southside, is a relatively ‘new’ quarter, incorporating much of Birmingham multi-cultural charm. The gay village, Chinese quarter and Hippodrome theatre, to name a few, can all be found here. As such, culture is diverse and thriving and the many clubs, pubs, shops and restaurants are a testament to this. These days, Southside has plenty of residential apartments and houses.
Brindley Place & Convention Area
The west side of the Birmingham City Centre is a very upmarket area with canalside living and leisure facilities at there very best. The Brindley Place area contains several famous international entertainment centres including: The International Convention Centre, National Indoor Arena, Symphony Hall and Sealife Centre. As such there are a number of hotels facilitating the tourism aspect. The west side of Birmingham City Centre area is also home to the mailbox and other upmarket shopping centres.
The Gun Quarter – is an area undergoing plenty of change. A long decline in the gun trade since World War One and Two has seen this area slowly convert into a residential complex. As such, there are many unconverted buildings, representing the old warehouses and factories that supported the gun production.
